Back when I got into writing fanfic, by beta, who was old in fandom years, said that it might be a good idea not to tell anyone I wasn't English. And she was right, the first few years, I got a lot of 'that's pretty good for someone not English' from people -- instead of actual feedback whenever they realized I wasn't native to English. These days? Fandom transcends borders and languages and to certain point, culture as well.
