Torchwood and it's fic writers

No, I'm probably not being very PC under the cut, but I sort of need to get this down.

This morning I realized one of the older TW fic writers would be locking off her fic to the public eye because of some kerfluffle that's been going on. I don't blame her, not one bit.

However, if the comments in her post are correct, it makes me severely annoyed with the rest of the fandom. Someone mentioned that others had told the writer that her style didn't fit with the fandom...

Um. Right. Because all the other shite that's being posted does? The writer, [livejournal.com profile] tanarian used to do long, fairly plotty stories. I'm not saying I always agreed with her characterization, but I could mostly see where she got it from and even so, she was never really so far out of character that it bugged me all that much -- especially not since I could focus on the plot.

So, my question is, if her writing doesn't fit the fandom, what the hell does? Have a good look at the fanfic for this fandom, and tell me it's not 98,8% crap. The only longer stuff is mostly people who post neverending WIPs where the plot gets lost in longwinding and boring subplots (which are obviously the reason for the writers to write the story in the first place) about how big, strapping and loyal Jack takes care of his wittle woobie Ianto, who is pregnant and needs to stay at home. Who needs a keeper because he obviously isn't stable enough to take care of himself... Dear GOD! It's taken on the same ugly shape that SG1 did (Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson).

And secondly -- why does someone get to tell someone else that their writing is 'wrong'? I'm not saying that I like all the fic posted. Goodness, no. most of it's crap, but I'm in my right to just make a face and close down the window if I don't like it. I might poke fun at it on my own LJ, but I'd never go up to a writer and tell her her style wasn't right for the fandom... I might tell people to please use a beta-reader, but that's about it -- and only if I like the story and can see how good it could be if someone at least went through it and pointed out unevenly written passages and typos. I never offer, I'm not good enough to do actual beta-reading. But I can normally tell when a story could be lifted just that bit higher from having someone check it through. And I don't mean back-patters -- it's not beta'ing to read a fic and write back to say 'ooooh, lovely. Don't change anything, it's perfect the way it is'. I've had people offer to beta and then got that back.

No, that's not a beta-read, that's just annoying *glares*.

Right, I got sidetracked. Concrit is good -- You can either choose to listen to it or not, though. Tellling someone his or her style isn't right for the fandom...? Eh. that's not concrit -- that's just being too vague to do any good.

If that was indeed what happened.

Cheers, everyone - this was brought to you by high temps, a stomach cramp and PMT.
