Thoughts on TW S3 and the upcoming S4
I keep seeing forums where people are discussing how good/bad Children of Earth was.
I keep seeing the people going: I'm not going to watch S4 because RTD is a fan-dissing bastard/because they killed off Ianto (added to the loss of Owen and Tosh in S2) etc.
Then I see the ones claiming that if Ianto had been left alive, we'd have been praising the writing.
Ah. No.
I don't know about you guys, but I watched TW for the characters - because they were all fucked up. I sure as hell didn't watch it for the plot! I suspended my disbelief and enjoyed the people -- not caring all that much about the plot. This of course means that to watch S4, I'd have to get used to new people. I'm not entirely sure I can be bothered, if I know the writing's gonna be as crap as it always was. When I got into TW I didn't know that the writing was crap, so I managed to get into the characters before realizing that really, plot was more a coincidence than a planned happening.
If I'd been allowed to keep my characters, I might have been more open to ignoring the list of plot holes in Children of Earth (a list that's about as long as my arm). I enjoy well written and well-thought through sci-fi.
Unfortunately that happens VERY rarely. So I take the next best thing. I get invested in the characters and use crack-explanations to get over the hurdle that is plot holes. If you take away my characters, I just have the plot holes left, and quite frankly, I can't be arsed to cook up excuses for those when I'm not being paid to do so with interesting characters. I'm not fond of inconsistencies, but I can manage as long as I have the characters.
So, Rusty. You laughed when people asked you about Myfanwy, openly admitting you hadn't given it a second thought. You give us a lame arse '6 months later' at the end of CoE - and Cardiff's still standing. What about the rift? The rift manipulator? There was a huge explosion on top of the rift.
And my list is short compared to

How about you guys -- gonna give S4 a chance? I mean, if nothing else, I might try watching the first ep to give it a chance. It can always provide me with ammunition *grins evilly in Rusty's direction*
I'd actually have preferred if they'd written us a series about Victorian time's TW or about TW4, the one that disappeared. Though, I'm sure Rusty's forgotten that he told us that too.
