Tact or the lack thereof...
Been going through my mailbox... again... it needs a lot of special care...
Soooo, one of the Stargate mailing lists, a newbie pops up to ask for recs... nothing wrong in that. Someone pops up and recs... nothing wrong in that, unless you don't like what she recs... which I don't, BUT, I keep my mouth shut. Because you know, my mom taught me that if I can't say anything nice, I should keep my big trap shut... So I try -- and mostly I succeed -- MOSTLY.
Anyway. The rec is for Dangermouse's fanfic, which left me utterly cold. It's standard fanfic, not the worst I've read, certainly not the best. It's a matter of opinion I guess. Last time I came across some of hers, I didn't get halfway through before the grammar... problems and typos got too much. Topped with the fact that the characters were slightly... OOC.
Not that my grammar is flawless, far from it! I have typos too. I'm not even gonna use the excuse that my language is quite different from English, because 99% of my mistakes, I should be able to see myself.
See, I'm being nice here. Like I said, had I answered to that, I might not have been nice -- I do come across as a bitch sometimes. Partly due to the fact that I AM a bitch at times and the fact that I'm not native to the English language. So far so good.
Then comes an answering mail from another list sib. I don't know if she thinks she's cute, but as much as we're all allowed an oppinion, this might not have been the wisest to say...
Safe to say she lists all of the above reasons for not reading DM's fics. Just you know, nowhere near as tactful as I just did ^_~ -- actually, she didn't mention the grammar/typo stuff -- on top of it though she says that DM's fics are more quantity than quality... which btw is the truth ::shrugs:: and that you can easily substitute the pairing with any other fandom's. Yeah, to a certain extend I guess, it's the truth (minus the gate 'n' all *g*)
Point of this rant? Dunno, I lost myself somewhere back there... nah, what annoyed me a bit with the answer was more that she pounces on the rec, but doesn't rec any fic herself... Okay, so I cringed when I saw the rec, but still, the least she could've done would be rec something that SHE would concider good fanfic...
