how crazy am I to actually enjoy fiddling with CSS and HTML?

I'm slowly getting there... changed the LJ layout AGAIN LOL -- This time however, I sat down and tried to understand how the heck I could fiddle with the layout so it would match my webpage a little more... I think I managed okay...
;-P

Thank you -- I've wanted to do this for ages, but although I know the basics of CSS coding, it's finding AND using the interfaces in livejournal that eluded me for the longest time -- until I came across this (http://www.dysfunctionalchicken.net/component.html) tutorial.

yikes!!!! you are showing me a language i do not understand O.O
I am in awe of people that actually code like that!

could be alien speak for all i know of it LOL

and you 'enjoy' this??? O.O

LOL
I know the feeling -- don't worry -- it's one of the reasons why I only tell Nicci the basics when she asks -- I think I'd scare her if I just handed over the codes for her webpage for herself to fiddle with -- she's intelligent, but I remember the first time I worked with HTML instead of Netscape composer -- boy, I felt like it was ALL gibberish... I made the mistake of looking at a document witten with composer -- unfortunately a lot of such programs, including frontpage, load so much unnecessary code into it that it would make most people cry to try and figure out what is needed and what isn't

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i thank whoever invented frontpage!
I've looked at its coding, and the only thing i recognise is the 'title' LOL
theres just some things my brain cannot process! ::shrugs:: ah! well, no need to give myself a headache! i'll just stick with the programs *g*

I used to feel that way as well, but at one point a friend of mine showed me how much slower a page with a lot of codes loads compared to a 'stripped' version -- both pages had the same layout, same outcome but back then I was on dial up and seriously -- there was a huge difference.

Now? Now my problems come from a different side. I very rarely use Internet Explorer, because no matter how many safty patches MS comes up with, hackers keep coming up with new holes. So I use Opera for a browser. Now mind you -- most pages, no matter what they're made in, as long as they aren't extremely fancy, will load without any problems in Opera/firefox/mozilla/safari, but the moment there is some strange MS code in there? A few browsers either freeze or crash. The problem is generally that there ARE standards, but every browser is coded slightly different and has a slightly different way of reading a page -- hence all the problems. I doubt there's ever be a 100% standard in webcoding, though that would definitely make life all that easier for us all LOL

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
when I changed my browser to firefox, i noticed my site looked...um! different, and had to change a few things, ( that would explain it then!) *g*
so i'll keep it as simple as possible I guess!

I've heard about Opera! i may look into that one. because firefox just eats my memory so much! and thats not good!! 8-/

Opera has it's quirks at times, but the nwere versions become more and more stable and capable of handling problem. The only thing I've come across that still has a few problems is loading gmail/google mail -- I'm currently on the beta of the new Opera and it's getting there - but they say that the last little bug is something gmail will have to change -- it's the login for the mail system -- apart from that? I come across very few pages that won't load right in opera -- I like the email in opera as well -- nothing targets opera -- unlike outlook that seems like a trouble magnet when it comes to viruses.

[identity profile] skater-g8r.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm!!! i still use Outlook, tho i also use a mailwasher with it, but its probably about time i changed anyway! I may try that one then, so i can scrap the washer, its very cumbersome 8-)

Yup, it all eats away on the system's memory and before you know it, the computer's slowing down and you're cursing a blue streak (well, I am LOL)

You tell me -- I've been fiddling with the styles for half the day until I finally got this far *g*

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So classy! I love those headers *g* Say, when we fiddle with those styles, do we work on a 'new' layout, ie do we work on a layout while the one we currently use is safe and sound? I remember how it worked with S1 and HTML but I don't know about S2 and CSS or whatever, so I'm wondering *g*

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This (http://www.dysfunctionalchicken.net/component.html) tutorial is a simplified version of what I'm using, and it works from the idea of creating a new 'style' hence the old lj layout will be safe and sound while you work on a new one. A few of the things I put into it that isn't in the tutorial, is the borders on the tables. It's 'simple' CSS coding -- if you're used to CSS, go right ahead and fiddle, if not? Holler -- I've gotten used to using it lately and although it's more advanced than HTML, it's not as scary as it looks *g* -- It's taken me a bit to find the courage to really fiddle with it.

[identity profile] castalie.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Tak! Except *sigh* Okay see, I went to Denmark last year, Copenhagen, and now? I don't remember whether that's supposed to say 'thank you' like I meant to say, or 'yes' or 'fuck off' or... nothing at all, after all *pout*

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
::howls with laughter::
You actully got it right *g*

Oh, and I changed the layout again -- finally found a way to put the image INSIDE the table instead of as background for the entire page -- the problem was that I wanted my ordinary background as a background for the page and the banner as a banner.
