Firefly Pimpage - Mal Reynolds
So... I decided I'd try to explain to the people on my f-list who aren't firefly fans, just why the heck I'm having this much fun with the fandom...
Well, I'm gonna pimp it one character at a time -- with basic descriptions, screencaps/promos and icon bases.
Rest of you who ARE fans, feel free to dig inside as well, comments are more than welcome and the icon bases are yours to play with *eg*
Also, feel free to share some of your favorite images of Mal here as well, your favorite icons and your favorite fanfic.
* Mal means 'bad' in latin... and he is, a bad, bad man *g*
The backstory:
Born and raised on Shadow by his mother and the farmhands. He fought in the war between the Independents (AKA Browncoats) and the Alliance. Of course he fought on the losing side and it has definitely changed his character in the years between.
"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."
Later he buys an old firefly transport ship and names her Serenity after the valley where they lost the war. (I never said the man was sane now did I?)
The WHY:
Let me list the ways I love Mal *g*
I didn't really look twice until Mal showed why he was the guy in charge. The man is ALPHA. He can joke around with them all, doesn't even raise an eyebrow when Jayne calls him a dumb-ass, but the moment someone crosses the wrong line, they're put in their place.
In the pilot, Jayne cracks a joke on Kaylee and Simon's behalf and Mal just stares at him and quietly tells him to leave the table. It of course pisses Jayne off, but he does as he's told. At the end of the episode, there's a scene where Mal shoots an agent. Simon's got a gun trained on the man, but won't shoot. Mal comes up the ramp, in a hurry, pulls his gun and shoots the guy... just... BAM!
Mal can brood with the best of them, but he hides it under sarcasm. He's a capable man, who will listen when it suits him. It happens... I swear...
Can't exactly turn down a guy in such tight pants either, right? Even Kaylee calls him Captain Tightpants *g* -- fitting. And if you are to believe Nathan Fillion's commentary during the pilot, those pants split more than once...
He's a stubborn bastard and he may not want to admit it, but he cares for his crew, as screwed up as it is. He plays dirty but he's old-fashioned with a few things.
Simon: "I'm trying to put this as delicately as I can. How do I know you won't kill me in my sleep?"
Mal: "You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once. If I ever kill you you'll be awake. You'll be facing me. And you'll be armed."
The Pairings:
Um... anyone? I myself is more partial to the Mal/Jayne pairing because of the tension, but quite a few go for Mal/Simon -- unfortunately many of those stories end up a bit too sugary sweet for my liking. But the fabulous thing about Firefly, is that nearly any pairing goes. I can even handle the *gasp* het ones...

Best way to pimp a fandom, show 'em a naked guy... Yup, perfect opening to an episode, Mal completely starkers -- it also gave us one of the funniest scenes ever, where the rest of the crew find him like this...

What do you do on Unification Day if you're a Browncoat? You find an Alliance friendly bar and start a fight... Get banged around some and still manage to have fun...

Just a close up for the sake of a close up... I think this was after their version of basketball -- didn't seem to have any rules, but damned it looked fun and good with the guys and girls rough housing for the ball.
