Why I love the DS fandom (aka, whaddya mean it drying out?)

[livejournal.com profile] nicci_mac and I were talking about how sweet and nice the DS fandom is (I know it wasn't always so, but currently it seems very calm and nice)

So I got to thinking (no it didn't hurt this time either...) What is it I like about this fandom and what has struck me as particularly noticable?

Me: just check the comments on the entry. Half of them are DS people
Nicci: you think DS is gaining momentum then?
me: oh yeah It's def not a dead fandom
Nicci: why now do you think?
me: it's a friendly fandom
me: not too big, not too small
Nicci: maybe cos of the DVD's
me: everyone is willing to SHARE
me: you don't see that anywhere else do you?
Nicci: Nope

I mean, even before the DVDs were out, people shared TV-rips (some even with swedish sub-titles LOL) Even if you couldn't watch the show half-way around the world, people shared! And with places like yousendit.com and such, it's gotten easier. AND look at how lucky I was, when the box set of S3 of DS was discovered in Best Buy. A kind soul bought it for me and shipped it halfway around the bloody world!

My question now is: Why doesn't this happen in the Sentinel fandom? There are no DVDs out (at least not legally and I will NOT pay money for tv-rips). I mean, I'd love to watch Sentinel again. It's not being re-run anywhere around here at the moment and shipping VHS tapes around... no... My VHS machine is this close to croaking. It's really not worth the bother. But now, see... if someone out there was sharing via the internet -- I know it's not legal either, but I said I wouldn't PAY for anything that wasn't official -- I'm so weird when it comes to that LOL. Hey, TV-rips are TV-rips. 'S gotta be someone with the brains out there who could rip a re-run. IF someone was sharing, the fandom would grow. It would be easier to sucker introduce new people into the fandom. And with the ripping technology these days, we could get some WAY better screencaps than what is currently littering cyberspace.

But alas, this is not a Sentinel post. So why DO I love the DS fandom?

  • People are helpful

  • The fans will talk about ANYTHING involving the actors, movies, talk-shows, tv-series etc.

  • I've run into people I know from several fandoms ago LOL - it's a wonderful reunion LOL

  • I've seen the impact it's had on [livejournal.com profile] nicci_mac as well. Her manips are as beautiful as ever

  • People seem to have embraced the craziness of the show, one of the things about the series that really drew me in

  • It completely revitalized my muses LOL -- they are now on crack... constantly

  • To me it's a shiny new fandom. And the fact that it's a show that no longer runs, we can do all out interpretations without getting 'Jossed' *g*

  • the SUBtext... dear Lord...

And no, DS is not dying. It's just shifting from the mailing-lists to Livejournal. At least, I've found a lot more activity on LJ than I have on the lists.

But see, I think it is happening with the TS fandom, albeit not with real and official DVDs, alright. I mean, I got the whole series on DVDs for free because a very kind soul gave her second copy to me. And I made four copies of season one which I shared with four people - one of them made another copy and shared with someone else. Some of those people already knew the show and two of them discovered and one of them immediately fell in love with it. In the next months I'll be making new copies of the first season and the next for others... and I suppose some of the people I'll share with will share again *g*

Sure, the quality is not DVD quality but it's still watchable and enjoyable and the fandom is growing because of that *g*

I know I'm not the only one who's sharing like that - far from it - so I'd say it is happening in the Sentinel fandom, too ;-)

The due South fandom is also still very active on the fanfic side. Sure, people occasionally still write TS fic, but not in the quantities that you get in dS. There's a whole support system for dS fanfic writers on LJ. Plus it's kind of seen as 'where the really good writers hang out'.

And then there's the offshoots. People writing fanfic for Hard Core Logo, Wilby Wonderful, etc. It's kind of like the dS fandom had babies. So not only do you have the comfortable old favourites, you also get exciting new stuff.

There is a site which has the TS episodes online for free download. They are not all up there yet, but they are steadily being added. It has the bloopers too, as well as some other TS related bits and pieces.

I can't remember the URL right now, but I will go and look. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll get back to you..

Aha! Found it:

Ah, so even and old dog can learn new tricks LOL. I'm glad to see that it's getting there. Not to say, but I was VERY surprised when I entered the Due South fandom. I figured it'd be 'dead' sharing wise like TS was, because it's a cancelled show as well. (at least dS got to go out with a BANG ::coughs:: LOL) -- I guess I'd just gotten too spoiled with Stargate where getting the episodes never were much of a problem *g*

Though what I really do love about the dS fandom sharing, it's not just the show, it's everything that either actors have played a part in LOL

Plus it's kind of seen as 'where the really good writers hang out'.

That's it! It's so very opposite of SG and TS. There LJ is frowned upon. I mean, are we worse fanfic writers because we use LJ? Not at all. Actually, most of what's posted on the SG lists these days suck beyond words.

It's kind of like the dS fandom had babies.

::laughs::
Oh yeah. And everyone is kind to share movies and shows that the guys are in so we keep getting new material to work with. God, how I love this fandom LOL

[identity profile] maryavatar.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Oh yeah, the TS fandom sees LJ the same way vegetarians see McDonalds. I don't think I've seen any TS fic other than yours and mine on LJ.

On fact... there's so little TS on LJ I seem to have discarded all my Jim and Blair icons O.o

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
yay!
Now see, I knew bitching about it on LJ would help LOL -- I just hadn't thought it'd help this much *g*
Thank you so very much *g* -- I haven't seen the show in about six or seven years, so my inspiration was running kinda dry ^_~

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe, yeah, you're right. I've come across the same attitude on the SG lists. But there IS TS on LJ -- gimme a bit to find the links *g*

[identity profile] bentrumors.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As a recent DS convert, I totally agree. First, the show is a scream. *g* And everyone is so nice (Nicci sent me the blooper reel, and I know you offered to upload files if I needed them.) The fic is crack, I've gotten so many wonderful recs, I'm still not caught up, and the continued love from fans (ahem) and cast/producers is just flat out amazing. Has Paul Gross ever managed to talk about any other project to this day without mentioning how great DSers are? ;)

Now, I am more familiar with TS, watched a little in its day, but never really considered it slashy. Though that was in my pre-slash days so I'm not against watching again to reassess that view. *runs off to download*

Heh, my brain is offline tonight LOL. But I'm sure if you ask [livejournal.com profile] castalie, she can guide you in the right direction. She co-runs [livejournal.com profile] sentinel_thurs.

Yeah, and it's not just to get more people into the fandom. It's just an excuse to share the madness! The show is so different from other shows, so damned insane *g*

And yeah, I think Paul is proud of the show and completely taken with the fans *g*

[identity profile] maryavatar.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I'll go check it out :)

Here here! I love you for saying this! It's so true! The Due South fandom is so nice!!! I have never come across anything in the fandom that made me feel uncomfortable or upset. Just.Pure.Love. :)

::grins:: Any type of kerfluffle I think, was before my time in this fandom. I know I come across 'tales' from earlier days, and I'm glad I wasn't here for those troubled times. I think most of it was a Ray V vs Ray K thing. I mean, I like Vecchio, but I prefer Kowalski. It doesn't mean I don't see Vecchio as the first Ray. To me RayK is a completely different character, so I really don't see what the fuss was all about.

[identity profile] tallisen.livejournal.com 2005-10-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
that is very true :) i like both men for how different they are, but of course, i like rayk more ;)

Heh yeah. CKR is so sexy it's scary, besides, I have a thing for energetic guys with experimental hair --
::pushes Andromeda under the carpet, nope, never had a thing for Harper::

[identity profile] tallisen.livejournal.com 2005-10-13 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha! It's like a blessing that some men are just born with it. *happy fangirly sigh* Thank goodness they gave us CKR for RayK!
