[livejournal.com profile] nicci_mac and I were talking about how sweet and nice the DS fandom is (I know it wasn't always so, but currently it seems very calm and nice)

So I got to thinking (no it didn't hurt this time either...) What is it I like about this fandom and what has struck me as particularly noticable?

Me: just check the comments on the entry. Half of them are DS people
Nicci: you think DS is gaining momentum then?
me: oh yeah It's def not a dead fandom
Nicci: why now do you think?
me: it's a friendly fandom
me: not too big, not too small
Nicci: maybe cos of the DVD's
me: everyone is willing to SHARE
me: you don't see that anywhere else do you?
Nicci: Nope

I mean, even before the DVDs were out, people shared TV-rips (some even with swedish sub-titles LOL) Even if you couldn't watch the show half-way around the world, people shared! And with places like yousendit.com and such, it's gotten easier. AND look at how lucky I was, when the box set of S3 of DS was discovered in Best Buy. A kind soul bought it for me and shipped it halfway around the bloody world!

My question now is: Why doesn't this happen in the Sentinel fandom? There are no DVDs out (at least not legally and I will NOT pay money for tv-rips). I mean, I'd love to watch Sentinel again. It's not being re-run anywhere around here at the moment and shipping VHS tapes around... no... My VHS machine is this close to croaking. It's really not worth the bother. But now, see... if someone out there was sharing via the internet -- I know it's not legal either, but I said I wouldn't PAY for anything that wasn't official -- I'm so weird when it comes to that LOL. Hey, TV-rips are TV-rips. 'S gotta be someone with the brains out there who could rip a re-run. IF someone was sharing, the fandom would grow. It would be easier to sucker introduce new people into the fandom. And with the ripping technology these days, we could get some WAY better screencaps than what is currently littering cyberspace.

But alas, this is not a Sentinel post. So why DO I love the DS fandom?

  • People are helpful

  • The fans will talk about ANYTHING involving the actors, movies, talk-shows, tv-series etc.

  • I've run into people I know from several fandoms ago LOL - it's a wonderful reunion LOL

  • I've seen the impact it's had on [livejournal.com profile] nicci_mac as well. Her manips are as beautiful as ever

  • People seem to have embraced the craziness of the show, one of the things about the series that really drew me in

  • It completely revitalized my muses LOL -- they are now on crack... constantly

  • To me it's a shiny new fandom. And the fact that it's a show that no longer runs, we can do all out interpretations without getting 'Jossed' *g*

  • the SUBtext... dear Lord...

And no, DS is not dying. It's just shifting from the mailing-lists to Livejournal. At least, I've found a lot more activity on LJ than I have on the lists.
