beta request and TW mini-rant

Hello all,

[livejournal.com profile] nicci_mac needed a little pick-me-up -- which ended up with me writing her TW porn... Yeah, I'm that kind of friend XD

So, I sort of need a beta reader. No hurry, I'm going to give it an edit in the morning, possibly, and then send it off to whomever volunteers *g* -- it's a follow up to 'Meat' -- but mostly it's just smut -- a bit of tie-me-up but not to worry, there's nothing non-con about it.

Speaking of non-con, I read a TW fic the other night that just left me cold, or rather, made me want to throw up. It was set after Cyberwoman and I don't care what the author called it, because it was nothing short of non-con and there was nothing hot about it. I know Jack's not a saint, but that? No. I don't care how you reason, which I'd like to point out, there was very little reasoning in the story. But if Jack were to take Ianto to bed after that, would he really go through with full blown penetration if Ianto was clearly not in his right mind, barely aware of what was going on and obviously had never been with a man?

I might not go for all the sugary sweet fic in the TW fandom, but I'd really rather have that than non-con. I can't find the story again - I've never shut a browser window down that fast before.

please explain the meaning of "non-con". Non-consensual, perhaps? I don't understand.

And one thing that's always bugged me about slash is the speed and ease with which the writers take their heroes from full on straight to full penetration.

It's almost a macho mind-set, that.

Yeah, non-consensual -- sorry, habit of a lifetime to shorten a lot of fandom terms -- I can deal with the quick pace sometimes, but not if it's the first time -- and I want it addressed in the story, reasons for doing it, but the story I read here? Urgh, I think I scrolled down, hoping someone else would address it, but alas, everyone just thought it was hot *cringes*

Jack is many things but I don't ever read him as sadistic. He could have shot Ianto point blank during Cyberwoman he didn't. Rape standing in, in lieu of that? I don't buy it. Especially not if you remember the line in episode one series one where he says he's never getting pregnant again. I always read that line as it having been something that was done to him against his will so no, I don't think he'd so that to someone else.

But then I don't see non-consensual sex/rape as his chosen form of torture either. And yes, Countrycide tells us he was trained in that skill. I'd like to think it was high tech torture mind you, maximum pain without marking the suspect. But Jack does like vintage weaponry so who knows...

Exactly -- I can see him doing the torture, but I think it would be a non-messy version -- applying the kind of torture that hurts the most but takes the least work/makes the least mess.

And you know what I hate more than no explanation as to why? When the fanfic writer has Jack reasoning that he's doing it for Ianto's sake... Now THAT makes me want to hurt people.

I just read a similar fic, and although there were some comments about it, they were basically of the "this would be abuse in real life, but in pretend life, it's so hot!!" variety. (?!)

I really don't buy any day-of-Cyberwoman-sex fics. Who would be up for it after a day like that?

Exactly. I think what really got to me was that it was supposed to be hot -- I'm sorry, abuse like that, and as you say, after a day like that? No, it's like the biggest turn-off I can imagine.
