Wow

I've officially been blown away. I dare you to find me a movie that will do that to me. Because after Watchmen? No other movie will be good enough.

Mr. Spielberg, Mr Lucas... it's about time you guys retired. You'll never blow my mind the was this movie did.

I read the comic when I was around 10-12 years old -- most of it probably went over my head XD but I've recently started reading it again, giving it the attention it deserves. I thought my expectations would've been too high.

They weren't.

They were, if anything, a lot lower than the film delivered.

O.o

I'm in love. With the characters, the perfectly casted actors, the choice of music and the bleak, warped world of the Watchmen.

I'm officially awed.

Both [livejournal.com profile] nora_charles and I agreed that we'd be watching that movie again.

I have the feeling the new Wolverine movie won't make all that much of an impact now XD

They did an absolutely fantastic job. They had to change 1 major thing (because if they didn't they would have had a movie 2ce as long to explain it or total confusion as to WTF happened from the audience) but what they did made sense and worked well with the storyline. They also had to strip out some of the minor elements, again to keep it from being 5-6 hours instead of *merely* almost 3, but the group of friends I saw it with (all of whom have read the graphic novel and are fans of Alan Moore in general - or at least his earlier stuff) all agreed it was a wonderful movie, true to the original with a great cast and direction.

It's gotten rave reviews from all but 1 of the people I know, and at that the 1 person who did not think it was fantastic was mostly upset about the sex scenes - thinking they did not need to be as long or as explicit as they were. I do not agree with him; I think the source graphic novel was explicit so it is being true to that, and that the author used the sexual interactions to make a point that glossing over or shortening the on screen time of the sex scenes would have lessened. The difference between what happened when Dan and Laurie were getting it on versus when NiteOwl and Silk Spectre were getting it on was an important plot point for how the superhero persona increased their self esteem and affected their physical reactions. Shortening the scene in Archie (or fading to black to avoid being explicit entirely) would have discounted that.

So yes, totally blown away and a fantastic job.

I'm with you on the sex. I thought they did a wonderful job and that what they did on screen had purpose and was (pretty much) tastefully done.

Oh, I can't see why they'd be so upset with the sex. There's very little in the comic that doensn't serve a purpose and the difference between Daniel/Nite Owl and Laurie/Silk Sprectre were perfectly portrayed by the sex scenes.

[identity profile] ladyivy.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, my knowing that the friend who got upset at the sex scenes is very religious (in a very small, very conservative sect of his faith) makes me understand why he feels the way he does a bit better, but I don't share his views (my husband and I make it a point to NEVER discuss religion or politics with this particular friend, as we feel it could cause such an argument that might destroy the friendship since our views are so far apart),

I did not have a problem telling him why I thought the sex scenes were not only appropriate but necessary to the character development, and as his objections were mostly on moral grounds it made it hard for him to counter my point.

I know. The casting was awsome, wasn't it? I didn't really care for Dan/NiteOwl all that much when reading the comic (at least, not til the end) but once I saw the movie I was offically in love! The movie wasn't perfect, and if I thought long enough I'm sure I could find fault with a few things, but it still blew me away too. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie quite as much. It even kept my attention, which is a big deal, because even with movies that I love my mind tends to wander about an hour in, but this one kept me with the film for the whole (long) damn thing. I can't wait until the extended DVD version comes out!

Hehehehe, I can't wait for the DVD either. And yeah, As much as I love that several parts were panels lifted right out of the comic, I adored the prison scene, busting out Rorschack. It felt life a taste of freedom via Dan and Laurie. And they actually conveyed that scene better in the movie. I loved the kicking ass *g*

::twirls you:: wasn't it awesome? wasn't it? wasn't it?

i already watched it twice and i'm thinking about going again because it was just that good. what does it say about me that the last movie i went to see multiple times was MAMMA MIA?! ::facepalms::

i can't get over how magnificent that opening sequence was or how much in love i fell with the characters, even though (or especially because) they are so flawed.

and the visuals? i mean, take a look at the comic, it's like the characters stepped out of it and onto the screen. same goes for the buildings, etc. the cinematography paid such a great homage to the panels of the graphic novel.

stop me or i'll just keep on talking about it!

Oooh. Do you know the comic book? Not that you have to. I was amazed how well adapted it was, so I know even people who haven't read it will enjoy it.

It's a work of art and I doubt I'll be this blown out of the water by another movie for the forseeable future. I daren't say ever, because that'd just be sad LOL

But yeah, fab movie.

[identity profile] exeterlinden.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have the comic book on my shelf - can't figure out whether to read it before or after the movie *frets*

Oh, the decisions were are faced with in this life! *g*

I quite liked having read it beforehand, because it helps spot the really cool stuff, but if I could have a do-over? I'd watch it without, then read the comic book, then watch the movie again XD

[identity profile] cc-weasel.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear that it was done so well. I had been waiting to see it until I could read a few reviews - everyone seems blown away. Definitely sounds worth a watch. =D

Oh, it's very very good. I was surprised of how close they stick to the comic book -- surprised and happy *g*
