I AM slightly amused

I'm not going to go on about how much I want to hurt Rusty for killing off Ianto -- It IS annoying and I think quite frankly, it's killed off what interest I had left for the show. Don't get me wrong -- I'll still re-watch S1-3 because I do like it, but I doubt I can find the interest for a S4 (if there is one, because the ending of S3 sure wasn't playing up to that).

That said, this isn't even why I'm doing this post. No, I'm mildly amused at the fandom reaction. I've seen people act like the fandom itself will fall apart. That there'll be nothing left now that Ianto's dead.

Eh guys, it's not like other TV shows haven't had one of their characters killed off and still carried on.

It's the strength of fandom. If the fans are happy enough to write post-whateverpersondied fic or end up doing AUs (or merely ignore the death of the character and work around it), then the fandom will live on quite well.

We might, however, manage to weed out the most whiny of the bastards - sorry, but I am not fond of the ones who act like they're 14-year-old schoolgirls (when I know most of them are 40+ years). Those are often the ones whining the most. If you take offense of this comment, tough luck. I've been in enough fandoms over the years to spot that kind from a mile off and I've been around for long enough that I'm perfectly capable of ignoring canon and just set whatever I'm writing in either a different time period or alternate reality.

So, am I going to continue in the fandom? Guys, I've barely hung around the fandom for ages. I'm not fond of 'cooperate' fandom, if you can call it that. The centre of fandom tends to scare me (or make me sick). Am I still going to write TW? Goodness, yes. I still adore Ianto, I still want him to put Jack in his place - I still will write in Owen and Tosh as well when I do anything set in the ordinary timeline. That's what fanfic's for, fixing or pondering on a possible outcome of fictive situations.

I was amused that no one's thought of doing a virtual season, then remembered that 99% of the people IN the fandom (by this I mean those who are part of the communities) are too young (in fandom years, not necessarily in real age) to even know what a virtual season is. Mind you, I've seen some pretty crappy virtual seasons out there (among other things, Due South, which had so much potential, but the execution stank because the stories weren't particularly well written.) But if it's run a bit tighter a virtual season can actually be really good and often give the fans the closure that they feel they need.

That said, I wouldn't even think of taking part, because let's face it, I do not have the patience for the TW fandom. I know those of you on my flist who actively read and comment on TW related posts aren't knee-deep in fandom. You just enjoy the fic and to a certain extent, the show itself.

I can, for those few who are interested, let you know that I've started plotting out the third installment of Companion's Companion, just for the hell of it. It will probably be a weird one, but fact is, I'm probably going to keep writing TW fic on level with my other fandoms. I've never been particularly bothered by deviating from canon, as long as the characters are IN character.

So, yes, that's my little brain fart on this XD

Cheers peeps - I'm heading out to shop a bit XD

Heh, I can't be bothered, but I figure AUs are there for a reason XD

I'm used to the idea of a virtual season. I would still watch a fourth season of Torchwood. I liked the characters but after decades of watching Dr Who I'm used to the idea of companions coming and going. Even if I adore them:-)

Se, we're old enough to be used to VSs XD

I'll miss Ianto, but I can rewatch eps and write fanfic - it's not like it's the end of the world.

I read the TW fic, but seldom if ever comment on it.

The boorish attitude of many of the writers is off-putting to say the least. I like you, am sick of people that refuse concrit or to get betas.

So I try to stick to the good writers such as yourself.

This season gutted me and I'm so mad at RTD for taking away my TW joy. I have enough dark drama in RL I don't want it in my tv viewing.

I honestly don't think RTD intends to do a S4. If he does it will be difficult for me to tune in.

Thank you kindly. I still enjoy TW very much -- but fact is, with that ending? I don't see a 4th series happening.

Cool. Looking forward to it.

Oh yes, I've been plotting XD

People are saying it's the end of TW fandom? Weird. I love fandom because it can work around anything. Death schmeath.

I remember the Angel virtual season 6 was pretty darn awesome.

See, that's the right attitude. I'll miss Ianto more than most other characters I've seen killed off, but probably because it's the only current show that I'm into. If I had more to spread out on, if say, Merlin and DW were running at the same time, I'd have other things to focus on.

Hehehehe, hadnt had coffee yet?

People do get very invested in individual characters: remember SG when they killed off Daniel? Not pretty.

RTD had balls, I'll give him that.

That he had, that he had. And I was perfectly pleasant - I have no idea what you'reon about XD

Re: Ianto, I'm still in mourning. He & Tosh were the only main characters that I really liked. The rest were bastards, with moments of non-bastardness.

Re: the end of episode 5? I am so glad that they managed to hold it together & actually follow through on the storyline without wimping out to a fluffy ending, or hitting the temporal reset button. Yes, it sucks that it looks like the best season is the last season. But what a way to go!

Not sure I'd sign up to read a virtual season, I can too easily see the temporal reset button getting waved around - probably the rift, which doesn't have that doohicky controlling it any more.

I've actually taken the TW comm off my readingfilter -- I've skimmed through x number of fics based on CoE and most of them either revelling in Jack's guilt and loss or hitting, as you put it, the 'reset button'

And thus my distaste for a certain subsection of general fandom grows...

Seriously, if there hadn't been that '6 months later' bit you could have conceivably come up with a plot-line that involved Ianto being part alien (explaining the almost frightening level of organisation & fore-thought he showed - loo rolls & Jack's coat!) or a cyborg or something, & therefore coming back online a few days later once he'd healed up sufficiently, but the 6 months later bit nixed it. Too big a stretch. Plus using the rift would be horribly cliched.

Just thought I'd stop in for a moment and let you know I like your little corner of the fandom universe. I've periodically tried to read the general comm stuff but became almost instantly frustrated for the reasons you've mentioned before.

AUs are lots of fun as long as they are well written and in character (of which your stories do fantastically). Actually that seems to be the case for most fandoms I've considered myself 'a part of'. It'll be interesting to see how many of the more of the whinny writers this weeds out.

Thank you for the praise. And yes, I'm sure we're bound to lose a few good ones and a LOT of bad ones -- I'll miss the good ones, but the rest? Nah.
