Question

I tried to explain to a friend today why I prefer writing homoerotica.

I came up short. How the heck should I explain it? I mean, I do have vague ideas why. I like the m/m dynamics and the challenge of writing guys. Also, being a tom-boy, I like doing boy things -- you know, I used climb trees, run around doing stupid shit *g* - generally very physically active things.

I also like the mental image of two guys together. Nothing wrong in that.

So, everyone. Why do you read/write homoerotica? I'm just curious, as to how you'd answer explain it to someone who doesn't normally read that genre.

...Because het is boring. And predictable. You always know who's a top and whos's bottom. No surprises there, couldn't be any. I don't like it.
I (generally) prefer situations when there is a *choice*

Hmmm, I guess that could be one reason. Not that I couldn't and haven't written a woman on the top, but I think I get what you're saying about having the choice.

For me, its a lot of things. There is no one explaination.

I like the idea of being able to assume the role of a man when it comes to reading sex scenes. I guess that I like to imagine what having sex is like from the male pov. If I were to read het, then putting myself into the male role would mean I have to imagine having sex with a woman. As I'm not into women, then reading gay sex is just the ticket. And if I happen to find BOTH of the guys attractive, then I can pop in and out of their heads at will without the squick factor.

I have also always loved shows whith two strong male leads that care for each other. It doesnt HAVE to be about the sex, it can be about the feelings and the fact that these guys would die for each other is the ultimalte expression of love to me.

And finally - two guys fucking = HOT!!!!

I think that's the difference between you and I. I can do het sex from a man's perspective, but obviously only because I swing both ways.

Male bonding. Is that what you're thinking about? And yes, I don't have to have the sexual aspect in there either. I enjoy a good piece of bonding as well.

And of course, if the guys are good looking too, it's no trouble imagining the more physical side of a relationship

I've given up on trying to explain that one to anyone ^-^ But, if you really want to know:

I agree with the whole liking the look of two guys together. I figure I should probably write something that I'd enjoy seeing. Plus, with het couples there's a man and a woman, right? Well, if I wanted to see (even mentally) a naked woman, I could look in the mirror. So why waste 50% of the equation on something that doesn't hold my interest? So I take out the chick and add in another man. Then it's 100% enjoyable for my senses!

Secondly, everytime I write a female character (a major one, anyway) she ends up as the damsel in distress or a mega bitch. Unless she's the villian, I don't like doing that to a female. Maybe it's the latent feminist in me? Who knows.

Heh, it's always easier to try to explain to people who are already in the know.

*laughs at the damsel in distress image*

Ah yes, I see how that would become a problem. It's a thing we have to be careful about when writing female characters, unless it's part of the character, of course.

My sisters and sisters-in-law are forever asking me the same question.
I can't really answer them. I like the idea of two men together. I think it makes a pretty image in my mind. Men are less complicated for me to understand. (please, don't think I'm not a feminist by any means)
I kind of like how men can crash into each other too. They have lots of angles and less soft curves. They get angry and apologize less.
I think it might just possibly be because they are men.

So yeah, it's the joy of not having to hold back. See, that I get. I seem to feel the same way, especially when writing Firefly, and nothing more than when I put Mal and Jayne together. It can be lighthearted fun or it can be like a two-man barbrawl in bed, or well, any horizontal surface really LOL.

I read it because I find two men together very hot. Simple as that. :)

*nods* I think that would be my answer as well :D

Have you ever given that answer to anyone? I mean, I do, sometimes and it's kinda fun watching people's faces. It's like they don't know exactly how to handle that little piece of information LOL

[identity profile] barefootatkheb.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
lol..I have and yeah, my guy friends usually just roll their eyes at me :D but I don't see how it's any different then them liking girl on girl action :) I guess I could get into the deeper aspects of why I like slash, but usually I'm just too lazy (and I quite enjoy shocking people *lol*)

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. I think that's one of the things other people not in the know seem to have a problem understanding LOL

[identity profile] cat63.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Apart from the hotness thing, I think I like it because I like the sort of story where someone is hopelessly (or so they think) in love with another person and then finds it's not so hopeless after all. When the people involved are two guys, that kind of amplifies the whole thing, if that makes any sense.

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
See, yes, I get that. The m/m adds a little extra to the equation. It adds the amount of obstacles you can put in the way of them getting together. You have a much larger amount of those to choose from when you work with same sex pairings.

[identity profile] hoskie.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I will probably have the most boring answer: I read/write homoerotica because I'M GAY. :D

I imagine the reason why straight women get involved in the slash fandom is pretty much the same reason that straight men watch lesbian porn.

One guy is good... but two? Even better! ;P
ext_31419: (Default)

[identity profile] ximeria.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, absolutely. I rarely run into guys when I'm in a slash fandom, so I do occasionally wonder why you read it. I mean, we're bound to get a lot of it wrong *thinks about lesbian porn and realizes that's pretty flawed as well*

I just hope you'll let us know if we get it way too wrong LOL. I think me being bi, I can do both het and slash, but slash just gives me other options to work with. There's always the risk that just because one man is interested in another, it might not be reciprocal.

[identity profile] wadjet-theperv.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Because two hot guys having sex and better yet being in a relationship as well is hotter to me than a very hot curry on a hot day in Dubai. It's just as shallow and simple as that, really. Of course, there are other depths to exactly why I like the *kind* of homoerotica I do, but (pardon the pun) bottom line, it turns me on in a way that straight sex doesn't. Possibly because (getting pop psyche now) I have a poor self image and voyeuristic sex has always been more attractive than fantasies about me and A.N.Other sexy person whom I don't really believe I deserve to be with.

But that's just me and TMI *g*

*laughs*
I think we can all say that on some level we're shallow like that.

Hey, nothing wrong with some introspection in the guise of pop psyche, heh. And I get what you mean. Besides, it's that easier to write established characters together and sharing it than writing yourself into a story. Now wouldn't that give a whole new meaning mary-sue fic? *g*
